Welcome to our first ever blog post! Starting June, Feeding it Forwards will be giving monthly updates as to what we've been doing. June was a busy month, and we did lots!
FOOD RESCUES
In June, Feeding it Forwards completed 18 food rescues through our regular surplus-food pickup program where we collect on a regular basis from our more than 15+ food donor partners. Throughout the month, volunteers collected food that local businesses could no longer sell, and delivered it to community organizations instead of allowing it to go to waste.
This month we recovered 1482 pounds of surplus food, equivalent to approximately 1217 meals, through an average. of more than four rescues per week. We picked up from COBS Bread, Merci Boulangerie, Muslim Food Bank, Terra Breads, Blush Lane Organic Market, and Good Earth Cafe.
This supported five different organizations
Yukon Shelter
Directions Youth Services
The Kettle Society
Sisele Housing at Atira Women's Resource Society
Children's Cottage Society

Thank you to all of our volunteers! Also a big shoutout to our driver: Aniket, whose driving support helps ensure that our regular food-rescue routes can continue reliably. Because many pickups take place during school or work hours, dependable delivery support is essential to making sure surplus food reaches community organizations on time.

FUNDRAISER
On June 10, Feeding It Forwards held a Krispy Kreme fundraiser to support our work. Funds are crucial for us to maintain operations: van rentals, delivery logistics, paying drivers, supplies, etc.
With the help of seven volunteers, we sold 50 dozen donuts and raised more than $1,000. Thank you to everyone who purchased donuts, shared the fundraiser, volunteered their time, or helped make the day possible.
Community fundraising is an important part of sustaining Feeding It Forwards’ work. It helps us continue building the volunteer capacity, outreach, and operational support needed to expand our food-rescue network.

Calgary Expansion
June marked the first time Feeding it Forwards has expanded out of British Columbia! We have previously partnered with Okanogan Grocer in Kelowna, but now we are officially in Calgary! Our Calgary Branch is led by Saom Sakib.
On June 29, Saom completed Feeding it Forwards' first food rescue out of British Columbia, recovering more than 70 pounds of surplus food from Blush Lane Organic Market and Good Earth Cafe and delivering it to Children's Cottage Society. These pickups ensured that usable food reached an organization supporting children and families rather than going to waste. We will be continuing the pickup from these two businesses on a weekly basis.
For our rescue, we collaborated with Leftovers Foundation. The charity connects Calgary food businesses and charities. We have taken on one of these routes and we now organize the logistics behind the delivery to Children's Cottage Society, an organization that provides a safe haven for children in Calgary. We are so happy to reduce the strain on other charities, and we are so grateful for Leftovers' work. By collecting and delivering surplus food through this route, Feeding It Forwards is extending its food-rescue work beyond Metro Vancouver and helping ensure more usable food reaches children and families instead of going to waste.
